Afro Blue This song is performed in a Nañigo, sometimes called Afro-cuban 6/8 style. Nañigo, sometimes is called Afro-cuban 6/8 or Güiro 6/8, is interpreted with chékeres (shakers), batá drums, and tumbadoras.
April in Paris This song is performed in a Merengue style of about 144 bpm cut time. This is a rhythm from the Dominican Republic.
Bésame Mucho This song is an old Latin American standard performed in Bolero style. Bolero is a slow, lyrical ballad which is common not only to Cuba and Puerto Rico, but also to most of Latin America.
Green Dolphin St. This jazz standard is performed in Songo style. “Changuito,” drummer of the group “Los Van Van” has been credited with helping to create this rhythm, but two of Cuba’s foremost fusion groups also deserve to be mentioned, Grupo Afrocuba and Irakere.
Manteca This is a fast Mambo version of this jazz standard. The tempo of this song is about 232 bpm and is played in 2/3 clave. Mambo was popularized by great band leaders in the 50’s like Machito, Perez Prado, Tito Puente, Tito Rodriguez, etc.
Song For My Father This jazz standard is performed in a Cha Cha style. The “Cha Cha” evolved from the Cuban danzón and mambo and its creation has been attributed to violinist Enrique Jorrin.
St. Thomas This jazz standard is performed in Baião style. This rhythm comes from northeastern Brazil. Traditionally, Baião, was performed with accordion, triangle, and zambumba (bass drum).
